What is required
to get your certification?
How do you get
started?
Although attending exam
preparation workshops are completely optional, it’s highly recommend
that you take the time to attend them. The C.P.M. exams are
sufficiently difficult that even the most experienced purchasing
professional doesn’t really know as much of the right
information to pass an exam as he/she thinks.
It’s best to take the
exams one-by-one within two weeks of attending the appropriate
workshop. Taking all the exams in one day can be done, if desired, but
it will take you about 10 hours. Needless to say, taking all four exams
in one day is not recommended. All exams are computer-based, except one
written offering each year at the International Conference. The
computer-based testing is administered by ISM through an outside
supplier. Exam appointments can be set at your convenience for day,
evening and weekend, depending on your local Test Center’s hours. Exam
scores are given on-the-spot.

Steve Miller, CTM (Instructor)
Steve Miller is a business
executive, published author and nationally recognized speaker with over
30 years of management experience in purchasing, material control,
operations, Q.A., and manufacturing engineering. He began speaking
publicly in the seventh grade, and is lucky enough to work in a field
that he loves. In 1997 he started his own company, Miller Management
Systems, based in Simi Valley, CA. Steve’s company specializes in
professional development, strategic sourcing, and business negotiation
consulting. His responsibilities have ranged from engineer to vice
president at both domestic and international locations. Steve’s
contributions to the field of purchasing were recognized when he was
selected as the featured Professional Profile in Purchasing Magazine
‘s May 1999 issue.
Steve has
over 7,000 hours as a teacher and professional speaker in seminars,
vocational schools and colleges. He has taught contract negotiations for
California Lutheran University, and many customized workshops for groups
and private companies. His list of clientele includes Hilton Hotels
corporate headquarters, Countrywide Home Loans corporate purchasing
group, and The Los Angeles County Purchasing Department, to name a few.
He is always interested in helping a new client, but is happy to say
that he has many accounts that hire him on a repetitive basis. Steve is
a faculty advisor and instructor at Cal State-Northridge, where he
teaches the C.P.M. Exam Workshops and completed the re-design of their
Purchasing & Supply Management Certificate Program a few years ago.
Steve has also designed and taught web-based training programs for Cal
State-Northridge and Cal State-Dominguez Hills.
Steve has
written several articles for Inside Supply Management magazine.
One was entitled, “Evaluating a Job Offer,” which became a
workshop presentation at an ISM International Conference. Another
article covered “E-Commerce’s Impact on Logistics,” and has been
presented numerous times in ISM, NCMA and CLM conferences. In April
2000, he developed, co-wrote and participated in an NAPM satellite video
production entitled “Negotiation Strategies, Tactics and Techniques.”
He led a team of panelists for another satellite video production on
“Complexity Management” in February 2002.
Steve has
done considerable research on employee productivity, which led to his
preparation of the training program, “The Professional Employee: Finding
and Keeping the Best.” He spoke on this topic at NAPM’s International
Purchasing Conference in 1999. He also was selected to present two
workshops at NAPM’s 86th Conference held in May 2001. He has
authored numerous training products such as: The Eleven Traits of a
Great Employee and Are You Innovative and Resourceful?
Steve has a
unique communication & training style for adults. He does extensive
research on every topic he speaks on and presents the material in a
mosaic that is clearly understandable to all. His spontaneous humor
makes any presentation an entertaining experience!
When asked
about the most difficult aspect of being a professional speaker, Steve
had this to say: “When you sell anything, there’s three key ingredients,
in this order: Always sell yourself, first; then sell your organization;
and lastly, sell your product. If you did the first two properly, then
the product is much easier to sell.” He went on to say, “When you are a
professional speaker, though, you are steps one, two and
three all rolled into one. It’s the ultimate situation in any sales
opportunity. If a client does not like you, there’s no company or
product to back you up.” Steve relates this technique in most of his
seminars, since nearly every aspect of your professional work is about
selling, to some degree.
Steve is
Past-President of NAPM-San Fernando Valley, and is the father of a 14
year-old daughter, and 8 ½ year-old triplets. It goes without saying,
his wife is a saint! Steve is a third generation military serviceman
and Vietnam-era veteran. His spare time (when he has any!) includes
church activities and serving as Commander of a U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary Flotilla in Oxnard, CA.
